Stop for a moment and think about how much asphalt, tarmac, blacktop, concrete, cement, etc covers the ground that is under you. What happens when it rains? The water has no where to go but to the curbs and down the drain out to the bay (if you are from my area). I stopped to ponder this as I watched a neighbor of mine put in permeable pavers in their driveway. It was very beautiful and it serves to help filter the water back down into the earth. I thought what a great way to incorporate a little green into your life. We are in for a rain storm these next few days and I can’t wait to see how the new driveway works!

We got deluged by a HUGE storm last week in Northern California. So much rain fell and got washed down into the storm drains. I thought what a shame not to capture that water and use it for my garden patch. So I started thinking about ways that I could harvest the rain. I found this really nifty site www.composters.com/rain-barrels.com. They have everything you would need to capture rain water. I can’t afford to dig up my yard and install a huge underground cistern. A rain barrel is more my speed. I can’t wait to order ours. Hopefully we will have more rain, my lettuce seeds are waiting.

My heater came on last night for the first time this season. The sound of the heater is always a comforting sound. I was in a rosy glow this morning at 3:00 am enjoying the whirring comforting sound, then the earth warrior kicked in. I sat up and thought, “oy- how high is that thermostat?” I had to get out of bed to check. I was relieved to see we had set it at 60. Then in my sleepy stupor I realized, we need to get some insulation-it’s not THAT cold outside, the heater should not be on. So now the insulation search starts…

Eating Utensils

Most Americans did not begin using forks until the Civil war. Until then most used their fingers to eat, knives to cut their meat, and spoons with pencil-like handles to eat soups or stews. During colonial times forks were used in restaurants; at home they were mainly used in the kitchen and to hold meat while cutting it. As recently as 1897, British sailors could not use knives and forks to eat because it was considered unmanly.
